I was one of the "secret squirrels" that made up the OS division. Most folks didn't even know we were there!! Great working conditions, the port cat ran right through our spaces!. Great when we were in the North Pacific, but really sucked when we were in the warm weather!. I would like to hear from any other OS Division folks, either ships company or TAD for the cruises. Would also like to hear from any of the OI or OE folks. Who can forget the world cruise? I'm looking for some of the guys I threw a few back with at the el morroco or any of those other dives. I was onboard 85-89. The years have a way of making you a bit more appriciative of what you had. Those were four of the most important years of my life. Things I learned then I still use today (I'm an operator and firefighter at an oil refinery) and I look back at that time as so important, even though at the time much of it seemed a great big pain in the butt. God speed and God bless the Coral Sea and her fine crew. PN3 ERIC DAMMER <riericdammer@earthlink.net> - Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 19:12:36 (PST) I was stationed aboard the Coral Sea for awhile in 1950, serving mostly as a green shirt on the flight deck. I pulled the port chock on the first P2V Neptune patrol bomber to ever be deck-launched from a carrier. Great ship, great memories. Then I was transferred to NAS Lakehurst to be a flight rigger on blimps. Fred H. Moody, AM2LA <drfredhmoody@cs.com> - Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 17:58:49 (PST) I never had the privelege to serve aboard her. Even if I wanted to, it wouldn't have happened (she retired two monthes before I graduated from high school and subsequently going into the USMC). I remember seeing the Coral Maru whenever she visited NASNI in San Diego. Her along with then fellow Alameda carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65), (where my dad was assigned). The 1990 photo posted in this site where Coral Maru is sailing by the Big E in Norfolk on her way to retirement is like a final goodbye for two former Alameda "residents." Greetings to all Donald Palmer BM3 Donald H Palmer BM3 <dhpalmer@csonline.net> - Friday, December 05, 2003 at 13:34:00 (PST) Served aboard the great one from may 68 through may 70. I was a yellow shirt in V3 div. Do any one remember the phrase "GOING IN CIRCLES" well I was directing a A4 skyhawk on the elevator in the hanger deck, a large swell came out of nowhere and lifted the elevator and sprung it. Amazingly we got one tie-down on the nose and thats when I yelled "everybody off". The plane captain was still in the plane and the elevator hanging on by a thread. So! the ship was put in a starboard list for about 12 hours until we could secure the elevator. So the Stars and Strips our military newspaper reported that the Coral Sea was"Going in Circles". We were very lucky that no one was washed off or hurt. Do anybody remember that? Where are you Stanley Green (Philly, Dicky Fells (New Orleans), Ted parks? Have a new email address: (sidney_dockery@bellsouth.net), also can be reached at (sidney.dockery@mbusi.daimlerchrysler.com). Man does this site take a guy back to a time he will never forget. Most people can't even imagine or believe what goes on everyday in relation to going to sea on an aircraft carrier! Visiting excotic ports of call and just plain becoming a man in the United States Navy! There are so many friends made and relationships developed from all places and walks of life. Working during a yard period, going to sea for weeks at a time, hitting the beach in Subic Bay, P. I. are only things that we have lived and cherished as sailors of the U.S.N. This time in our lives will never really be understood by friends and family back home. Maybe that's the way it was meant to be? So be It! Oh well, I recently attended the Annual reunion in Portsmouth, Va. and it was a good time had by all. The only thing missing was more shipmates from my time period. My best friend Mike (Oscar) Pfeffer in Chicago is really on the ball contacting BT's and MM's from the old engineering gang! Check out WWW.usscoralsea.org for a mini reunion (Spring Fling) near you. I live in Alabama but will attend the Midwest Spring Fling in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 2004! Attended the one in Rockford, Illinois in 2003.! Well, I have rambled enough for now so I will close and ask for any and all to JOIN THE CORAL SEA ASSOCIATION!!! God bless our forces around the world!!! Has father time taken his toll? I was stationed on the Coral Sea from 1960 until June of 1963. I left the ship in Subic after our visit to Sydney, never being able to obtain a cruise book for that year. Does anyone have one that I might get the publisher`s name and address, to see if they are obtainable? Another item I would dearly love to have ia a copy of the articles concerning our visit to Australia. I originally was in V-3 division, but was transferred to V-6. This is a great site, a place where all of the old salts can remenice (sic) and wish they could do it all over again. Ah, youth! It is truely wasted on the young. What we wouldn`t give for it NOW. John F Pritchard[Coral Sea Historian <videooutlook@teknett.com> - Friday, October 03, 2003 at 11:15:04 (PDT) Let me echo your message, Mr. Dress. It's only as we grow considerably older than we were back in our Coral Sea days than we are able to fully realize that they were some of the best we've ever known, and not likely to see again. Even though at the time, some of those days seemed like they might not ever end, I'm sure I speak for everone when I say we now look back to those far away places and long watches with warm fondness. Bob, we all thank you for your hard work in developing this site and allowing us all to journey back to places and people that had been long been forgotten. I know I have. As far as the "Association" is concerned, your wife's posting should startle us all. If I'm correct, this is probably a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, with a Board of Directors. Such actions amongst organizations like this are not uncommon. They do as they wish, believing their actions "are in the best interest of the membership", including actions such as the ones Mrs. Dorais has described. To the Association, and the President: Please address the concerns which have been posted in regards to this site. If not, you surely shall NOT ever see me as one of your members. This allegation is inexcusable, and you owe it to all of us to explain it. Jon Allen <kalakala_1@hotmail.com> - Thursday, October 02, 2003 at 13:50:08 (PDT) I must admit that I was more than a little disturbed after reading Molly Dorais’s posting this morning. I for one am computer ignorant, so I’m not in full understanding of the potential implications of the pilfering of ‘codes’ to all that Bob has created here. I was hoping that the site was not damaged in any way. I immediately checked some features of the site and found that all seemed to be working from my end. So after consulting with some folks here at work, I am summarizing that all info on Bob’s site has been copied somewhere without permission. If this is the case, it is wrong. But for all that is wrong with this unacceptable action, no one can copy or take away our appreciation for all the unselfish hard work, research, and creativity that Bob has put into creating this website. We who explore this website to relive all our memories, share our stories and pictures, honor our fallen shipmates and a great ship will always thank Bob for all that he has done for us. Molly had all the right words in her posting…. thanks Bob for the “fellowship, and a site that honors our country, the ship that we love and the amazing men that served aboard her”. God Bless ..!! v/r Bob Dress Bob Dress <dressra@phst.navy.mil> - Thursday, October 02, 2003 at 09:51:08 (PDT) This morning, my husband, Bob Dorais (USS Coral Sea ’76-’80), was taken aback by the actions of The Association”. Since March of 2000, he has been personally hosting this USS Coral Sea Tribute Site (www.usscoralsea.net). While doing this, he has offered his time, materials and energy in getting the “official” site up to speed. “The Association” has refused any and all help, but this has not stopped them from “helping themselves” to all of his pictures, stories and even resorted to pilfering some of his codes…word for word. The dishonest and underhanded way of obtaining these is wrong. Pure and simple. This site and the pictures my husband has up are for you, the sailors, and your families and friends. So many of you have sent him pictures (he always acknowledges submissions) and he has bought countless cruise books to scan and has done countless hours of research. He has spent hundreds of hours cropping and cleaning up the pictures so they are near perfect. His blood, sweat and tears are poured into this site, the site that honors his country, the ship that he loves and the amazing men that served aboard her. He has never asked for, nor taken money for any of this. He has never asked for an “atta boy” nor would he ever expect one. All he wanted in return for his efforts was a site where people could relive memories or could learn to appreciate this magnificent ship and the men that served upon her. Politics play no role in what he was trying to accomplish. When he realized that all of his pictures had been taken from his site, INCLUDING ones of him during his own cruise, he said “It feels like an arrow through my heart”. No one from “The Association” asked if it was alright…if they had, he would have gladly given them the pictures and more. Men of honor serve our country, I am appalled that men with no integrity run the “The Association” and allow politics and egos to rule what should be a fellowship …what a disgrace. Apologies to the innocent who are in my line of fire. Shame on the rest of you. I served aboard the Coral Sea From Feb. 55 to march of 56. I was in the 4th div, gunners mate,on the 3/50's.I made the 55 & 56 cruises.I was just looking at the 56 year book and it brought back alot of good memories. How many remember the 56 cruise when we signed the schrol, the lenth of the flight deck, to benefit the Hungarian refugees. We donated the money from the cruise book to their relief fund. There's a picture in the year book of it. I'm the one in front, with the watch cap on signing.( My only claim to fame) That picture i was told ,was in all the major publications in the country. I remember making the trip to New York and waitng for hours , because of the currents, to be able to dock at pier 86. When we finally came in that evening we took part of the pier down. It bent one of our gun sponsor decks. I lived in NY at that time and i was in a hurray to get off the ship and head home. I remember walking through Times Square at 11:00 that night with a buddy of mine, Chickie Henn, who was from Ohio and was in awe at the sights. If any one of you guys were aboard in 55/56, like i said i have the year book and every divisons pictures are in it.Just let me know what div you were in and i'll look it up for you. Smooth sailing to you all. Lou Casale <lou437c@earthlink>net> - Thursday, August 28, 2003 at 11:34:27 (PDT) My father, LTJG LeRoy Merryman, was a plank-owner in the engineering department. He died in 1961. As a child, I recall the awe and wonder the ship inspired, just as previous assignments like the SALT LAKE CITY (CA-25) and CANBERRA (CA-70) did. (They were all ships which looked like ships, not the boxes they came in!) I still have a large ashtray in the shape of the ship, made of stainless steel, with the sandpit hollowed out in the center of the flight deck. Fascinating site. Smooth sailing to all. Paul D. Made 2 Westpac cruises during that time; 2 Refresher Trainings; 2 Carrier Qualifications; and a lot of ports in between. Some of the memories are rather hazy now. Come to think of it some of the memories were rather hazy right after I had them. So I need help in bringing them to the surface; therefore anyone in CR division during this time period, let's start making some contacts to meet at a future reunion. Check in to this guestbook, or the Coral Sea Association guestbook, or contact me. I've been in contact with a few people, who have been in contact with a few other people (John Blondin, Ted Anderson and his brother Gary, Norm Buckley, John Coley, Mike Kreilein, etc...). Let's get together and relive some 'good' times; everyone can bring 30 days worth of dirty laundry with them. We'll make sure the rooms are small, have no air conditioning during our stay, and are right next to the airport! We'll all feel right at home! AZ2 MARTY BECKER, AMH2 LLOYD RIDEAUX, AZ3 WILLIAM CAREY, AZ3 CHRIS CONN, ABEAN NATE SANFORD, ABE3 BUDDY REED, AZ3 RICE AND OTHERS I WAS STATIONED WITH. REMEMBER THE USO ON MARKET STREET DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO. MAN I SURE MISS THOSE TIMES. WHILE WE WERE DEPLOYED, CAPTAIN PECK HAD JUST TAKEN OVER AS CO IN THE PI AND AZ3 CAREY AND I WERE WALKING TO THE EXCHANGE ON THE SUBIC SIDE FROM THE GYM. CAPT PECK WAS GOING THE SAME WAY WITH THE AIR BOSS AND DECIDED TO PICK US UP AND GIVE US A RIDE (PROBABLY BECAUSE CARY HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN AWARDED SAILOR OF THE MONTH). THE THING I REMEMBER WAS THAT OUR NEXT PORT VISIT WAS TO BE IN HONG KONG AND THE CO WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF HIS DAUGHTER WHILE WE WERE THERE SO HE COULD SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH HIS WIFE. EVEN THE AIR BOSS (WHOSE NAME ELUDES ME)WAS JAW DROPPING SUPRISED. CAPT PECK LOOKED RIGHT AT ME IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR AND I WAS QUICK TO TELL HIM THAT THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS MESSING WITH THE CAPTAINS DAUGHTER AND HE'D HAVE TO FIND SOMEONE ELSE. BILL GRIEBEL AZC USN RETIRED BILL GRIEBEL <LECLUB185@AOL.COM> - Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 07:09:01 (PDT) Today a great man passed away, Bob Hope. I remember the cruise of '67-68, when he brought his USO Christmas show to the Coral Sea.What a thrill it was seeing him perform for the Crew. He brought a touch of home to all of us. everyone laughed at his jokes and had a tear in their eyes when the show was over and they sung Silent Night. I have the pictures of the show, and of him , Raquel Welch, Barbara McNair, Miss World eating in the Mess hall . He was open with everyone. I remember at the time thinking how he had performed for my father during W.W.II, and I was seeing now. Little did I know, at the time, that he would still be performing for my father’s grandchildren in the Service. He was a true entertainer, and a friend to everyone in the military, I thought it was the greatest show I ever saw, and under the circumstances it was. May he rest in peace. I served 3 years 7 months aboard the Coral Sea. and that show is one of the best moments on board . True, Coral Sea was not nuke powered but she certainly didn't burn diesel fuel either, like all conventionally powered carriers, she burned "NSFO" (navy special fuel oil) also known as Bunker "C", commercially, it is #6 fuel oil. This kid Jordan did say his Grandfather was in "W" division, as in "Weapons"- which would include "Nuclear Weapons" which Coral Sea carried on 2 in not all 3 WesPac cruises I made. As for your telling Jordan #65 and up -Nuke. #64 and down Diesel, That's not correct either, America, #66 and Kennedy, #67 were both oil burners, Nimitz, #68 and up are nukes. Sorry to bust your chops but if your going to get on some ones case you should at least know what you talking about. which brings up another point, your claim to have had Coral Sea going as fast as she'd ever gone, SORRY, wrong again! We were off the Calif. coast, returning from WesPac in '68 or '69 headed for the yards, so we did the usual "full power run" to see what might break. With only 10 boilers on line, 2 were out of commission with blown tubes, we turned # 4 screw at 209 rpm (full power for the out board screws was 193 rpm, inboard screws were full power at 213 rpm on a 203 rpm bell) actual speed was 37 knots, which is faster than 36 knots and I don't have the foggiest idea if that's as fast as she'd ever gone or was capable of going. In case you don't know why the outboard screws turned slower then the "The Bell" and inboard screws turned faster, it's because the outboard screws were pitched 19ft 3in. and the inboard's were pitched 18ft. 4in., the reason for the difference in rpm was to made it harder for a sub to "count the turns" and calculate the ships speed. Hope you learned some thing today and may you have someone care enough about you to put forth the effort that Jordan Ruth is to find out about his grandfather C. All I was saying was that the guys in M-3 at least gave me a chance to prove what I could do. Capt. Pratt cut me a deal that if I gave 6 months of good service to M-3, I could go to any Engineering Div. I wanted. Anderchuk, Clevenger, Cooper, just about everyone in M-3 at least gave me a decent shake. More than I can say about M-2. The truth of the matter is that even though "I wasn't the easiest guy to get along with", I kept my mouth shut to the MAA about the "hammer". It's one thing to get hammered, happened to everyone. But when you're halfway up the ladder and get hit with GP, it was all I could do to hold on to the rail. Not cool. When the guys in medical wanted to know what happened, the Medical Officer almost insisted I go to the MAA, but I didn't. In the end, Capt. Pratt kept his word, and I wound up being the Asst. Workcenter Supervisor for Hydraulics before I left Coral Sea. Obviously, someone thought I was fine to get along with and did a good job. Anyway Jack, I don't remember anything bad between you and me, and I understand you taking offense by me slamming M-2. Sorry. Just the way I see it. I'm sure Rick has told you we get together. DARRELL SAVAGE <DARSAV@hotmail.com> - Tuesday, July 01, 2003 at 13:47:05 (PDT) Count me in, Coop Jr. All you guys in M-3 were great to me, after I got water-hammered with General Purpose Detergent (the whole 5 gals) by the shmucks in M-2 and they flushed my eyes out with saline for an hour in sick-bay. MAA was gonna fry the whole watch-standing team. Capt. Pratt decided I needed to get out of there, and wound up in M-3 before going to Hydraulics. Some of the guys in M-2 were okay, but most a bunch of jerks. Especially Dovel. What a horse's hindquarters. I was glad to be outta there. M-3 welcomed me and things turned out fine. I was with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 451 (VMFA-451), but I worked in AIMD Avionics. I always remember the cruise as bitter-sweet. It was sweet, and a great honor, to be part of this great ships last cruise. We had a great crew, and we had a great time in the Med that summer. But every time I think of the cruise, I always think of the explosion in turret 2 of USS Iowa during our work-ups. I remember watching the helicopters bring in the wounded Iowa Sailors to our Medical Dept. The Iowa went with us to the Med anyway, and I've got pics of that damn turret gun sticking up in the air the whole cruise. Anyway, it was great to be a part of US Naval History. But they changed my orders at the last moment. I was the only ships company Aviation Electronic Technician aboard. Which was weird since there wasn't any planes on the ship. After they realized I had nothing to do They made me a Mess Deck Master at Arms until we left dry dock and the planes returned. I was also stationed in Naha, Okinawa, Japan in 1973-74 with VC-5. I was a A-4 plane captain, we also had P-2, S-2, H-3. We flew targets and drones for ships to shoot at. They send me to AIMD to repair aircraft Black Box electronics. Not attending Sea School I unknowingly began to take on the largest learning experience of my life at that time, I was getting chewed out at least once a day, but soon after getting underway on the 13th west pac I soon began exploring as much of the ship as I could. I would frequent the metal shop where I would learn to engrave. I had also acumulated 18 hours at the helm, remembering one day, the ships Captain entered the bridge and said "So when did we start letting trees drive the ship" since I was in a camo uniform. And of course there were many other memorable experiences. If there is any one who may remember me feel free to drop me a line or two. I was 15 years old and my amateur dance group performed on the Coral Sea. It was the most enjoyable performance of my dancing years (over 20). We were treated like movie stars. Such a memorable experience for a 15 year old girl. There were a group of red shirts who signed and gave me a shirt. Also met a set of twins named Tom and Lane Dobbs. Would love to hear from any of you. Diana Rodriguez-Zimmerer <dianar@condorsys.com> - Thursday, May 15, 2003 at 10:37:56 (PDT) Been a while since I posted anything. Onboard '78-'81 with the Marine Detachment. Had some good times and some not so good but I'll always have good memories of my time onboard. The port call to Thialand brings back the best memories. REMEMBERING the good times and also the bad. charles w. cline <chase @ app-net.com> - Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 21:34:19 (PDT) I served aboard the coral sea while stationed at Norfolk, VA. I am a plank owner and was part of the decommissioning crew in 1990....I was not able to attend the ceremony on April 30, 1990, as I left Norfolk on orders. We made the last cruise to the Med that lasted only 4 months in 1989 and returned back to Norfolk, I believe in September. We hit numerous ports, to many to mention, in France, Spain, Turkey and Egypt. The one thing I remembered prior to our cruise was that our berthing compartment on the 02 level burned due to a fire that started in the supply space in the hanger bay. No one was hurt but the members of OZ division (my division) had to rehab the berthing compartment thought the fire was caused by negligent by supply..Oh well, thats life! Damon R. We painted the port side of the Coral Sea while in dry dock at terminal Island, Ca. Then I severed Captain Frick on his Captains gig. The crew was Ray Seagler, Jerry Bolt, and yours truly. We went out on a shake down then headed to Alameda, Ca. During this whole time I played rugby on the ship's team as well as Chapman College in Orange, Ca. Both teams went undefeated. We left and went on our west pack. While on west pack Rear Admiral Peck as me to ram rod certain chores. We completed those assignments with flying colors. I could not have accomplished the rear Admirals wishes without the help of Chief Callas, and Dave Burkhart. While in Japan, I injured myself in a game of rugby. I had to be flown back to Oakland Ca. to put my leg back together. Occasionally I stay in contact with Doc, and Joe Lopez from R division. TOM JACKSON FT3 <TOMJACKSON57@AOL.COM> - Friday, March 28, 2003 at 20:36:38 (PST) Ahoy Shipmates! It's been 30 years or so since I was aboard the good ol' Coral Sea (CVA-43). I sweeped, cleaned and maintained firefighting equipments in the Haggar Bay 1 and 2... hahaha!! But most of all I like spinning that spotting dolly with a million dollar jet hook-up to it and that's good experience for me. V-3 Division, under Lt. Kelly 1972-1975. I'd like to tell you about PI, but I'm very sure everyone have a good taste of everything it had to offer! e.g. babes, bad ass bands, and more babes!!! now that's an experience! What is even more remarkable is the fact that after all the drugs ingested, inhaled, or smoked... coupled with my lively, colorful and lengthy work history--I'm still alive! God reached down, convicted me of my sinfulness and drew me to Himself by way of His son Jesus. Oops! Almost got sidetracked. Anybody remember James (mobster wanabe) Tarantino, Marquez, Brad Elkins, Mike Lorback, or Benjamin Taylor? Got some pic- tures and memories to share with anyone brave enough. P.S. Not too familiar with any of the shipmates who signed in, but I also served aboard that great ship called the Coral Sea. Best info, so far, is that he was from VAH-2 and he jumped between Pearl and Sydney. I want to know how the Navy explained his disapparence to his family since a lot of big brass met us when we returned to Alameda. Warren Luck, a shipmate of Puckett's, tells me he was from the Seattle area, got into a lot of minor troubles with the Navy and spent a lot of time on mess duty. I've contacted the Ship's Legal Officer at the time,Lt. Melhorne and he has no specific knowledge. Captain Roemer, CO who sentenced him passed on about a year and a half ago so it's pretty much a dead end. I think it is time to sign in again. I was an AT3 with VAW-11 aboard Coral Sea with CVW-15 when we left for Far East deployment from Alameda on 12-7-03. I remember the excitement I felt steaming past Alcatraz, under the Golden Gate, and out of San Francisco Bay. I remember learning that there was some problem with the ship, I believe, related to one of the propeller shafts. We learned about this before pulling into Hawaii on 12-11. Because of the mechanical problem we were delayed in Hawaii for several weeks. The Air Wing off-loaded to Barber's Point NAS. We had nothing to do. We had to go to the hangar area where our planes were and muster each morning. We got to go to noon chow pretty early and did not have to come back. So, we would eat and then my friends and I would often go to the base swimming pool for the afternoon and play bridge and jump in the pool occasionally. We left Pearl Harbor on 1-16-65. At some point before that I rememeber we had went out to sea for a week or something like that for Operational Readiness Inspection I believe. 12-22-64 was my 22nd birthday and I know we spent that day at sea. Anyway we left for WestPac on 1-16 and the rest, as they say, is history. We still thought we were on a 6 month long peace time deployment. We went to The Philippines(PI) and picked up Admiral Outlaw and then left port after being at the pier for 3 hours. We were out doing patrol or whatever for two weeks and were on our way to PI for a scheduled in-port period when we got word to turn around and rendevous with the Hancock and Ranger. This was in early hours of 2-7-65 as the VC had bombed some US Barracks. This led to President Johnson ordering retaliation. This was Operation Flaming Dart in which planes from the three carriers carried out air strikes on North Vietnam locations. Although these were not the first strikes against North Vietnam I believe these were the first of the continuous air war which then lasted for years. Operation Rolling Thunder began shortly after Flaming Dart. I remember a room near our squadron ready room which had a big paper sign on it which said, "ROLLING THUNDER WAR ROOM. NO ADMITTANCE." or something like that. We then would be at sea for periods of about 30 days it seemed and then into PI for liberty for a few days. I went into Olongapo a lot. We went to Hong Kong twice during the whole deployment. In June we thought we were going home. We went to Yokosuka Japan for about 8 days I think. We left Japan late in the month and thought we were going home. Accurate or not I still remember that the ship seemed to be headed South, not East. I remember mentioning this to my shipmates. Then about 3 hours out of Yokosuka Captain Cassell, the ship's CO, came on the 1MC and told us we were not going home, we were going back to Yankee Station; that we had been extended on deployment. So, Coral Sea and everyone on her continued the war and we finally left Yankee Station about October 18. We went to the PI and I read later that was so we could off-load ordnance. We then went home. I remember we crossed the International Dateline on Oct 26 and we took a somewhat Northern route home. I still have copies of maps which showed our homeward progress and were distributed daily. We arrived at Alameda on 11-1-65 after a record breaking, timewise, deployment by a US carrier. I understand the this record stood until 1982. It is my understanding the Coral Sea with something like 7 combat deployments to the South China Sea spent more days on the line during the Vietnam War than any other carrier. I may have more memories but that is enough for now. Anyone is welcome to email me. /s/Moe Wadle(pronounced wad-lee) Maurice "Moe" Wadle <moewadle@yahoo.com> - Sunday, March 09, 2003 at 06:01:47 (PST) served on cva-43 from 70-74 ********* <LegolasV@hotmail.com> - Saturday, March 08, 2003 at 18:56:12 (PST) Im am seaching for any one that new my my grandfather at the abopve given name. he was the head of the nuclear "devices" on board and of devsion W. Joy Figueroa <alenadaisy@yahoo.com> - Wednesday, March 05, 2003 at 20:46:09 (PST) I was a Marine with VMFA-314 on "The Ageless Warrior's" 85-86 Med cruise (I worked in the S-3 Operations Department. Had some great times and made alot of new friends; both Navy and Marine. Though I was involved in flight operations and not the inner workings of the ship itself, I was thoroughly impressed with the knowledge, professionalism, expertise and courtesy of all Navy personnel onboard. The chow was fantastic (except for the occasional "bug juice") as well as all the onboard services. One of my favorite times is when I had to walk flight security. Being alone on the deck in the middle of the night; with nothing but the sound of the water below and the stars above was something I have never quite experienced since. When we went into Libya, everyone worked together as one to ensure success, which was given. Lets all pray and encourage, in any way we can, those that are serving now to ensure our freedoms and may they all come home safely. Peggy Peggy Pearson <Starangelady@aol.com> - Sunday, February 23, 2003 at 06:44:32 (PST) I read this guestbook weekly (at least) and it struck me recently that you see people signing in from EVERY decade of the Ol' Gray Lady's service life. Funny, maybe, to those who do not know the pride and heavy emotion that comes from serving aboard her. Some of the entries you see in this guestbook are from people who served aboard our Ageless Warrior 50 YEARS AGO!!!! The casual observer may not notice, may not care or may not understand how a ship of cold steel can effect emotion and inspire memories from as much as half a century ago as much as a living, breathing person. To those of us who served aboard her, felt the salt spray in our face, made it all work and accomplished the mission in spite of the odds against us, we understand and no explination is necessary. To those who do not understand, no explination is possible. The shipes kept us well supplied in steam to get planes off the 'pointy end' and fresh water to wash off the grime that comes from a shift at work, AIMD kept the parts fixed, supply kept us supplied with beans, blankets and spare parts, Airedales kept the birds in the air, the flight deck and hanger deck yellow and blue shirts put the birds where we needed them... everyone else who kept the beans and coffee hot, the paychecks flowing, the dental and medical crew kept us fit for duty. Topside, they kept us pointing at the wind and held a steady course when it was time for unrep and got us to our liberty ports when the time came. When it 'hit the fan' we were ONE CREW. Each of us knowing that everyone else on the ship was watching our back even when we had to fight that ship in combat. I miss her like I miss a loved one who has passed. The good days and the bad. The good days serve to inspire a smile. The bad days serve to make the good days sweeter. She is a part of each of us... I guess till the day we die. Sometimes I look out at the sea and remember what it was like to stand out THERE and look back. I miss the days when I went down to the sea in MY ship and scribbled my additions to the pages of history. The call over the 1MC DING DING!! DING DING!! "Shift colors... the ship is underway. She still sails in our memory and will do so as long as her stories live in the mind of the last surviving crew member or his grandchildren... remembering what grandpa told them about when he was a young man and went down to the sea in HIS ship. I was on the mid watch when it happened - with one guy who knew what he was doing, one other green person (besides me -I was 21 and didn't know squat) - anyway, the worthington centrifugal compressor was sort of a backup compressor in one of the other engineering spaces, but was down for repairs (had been down for about a week) The space we stood watch in had an Elliot centrifigal compressor--to make a long story short--we always had some kind of parade that would rush down the stairs in the middle of the night and on this eve we went down stairs to see the tide&scrubbrush party--unfortunately, somebody decided to play a practical joke and turn the air inlet upside down on the compressor and stop the air flow (they probably assumed that the worthington would come on-line) on the sound powered phones you could hear almost every fireroom cussing because of "flame out" loss of air pressure...you take the rest from there. we never did find the prankster. indian ocean - Coral Sea - dead in the water. Brian Walker (goggles) <bmw226@mchsi.com> - Saturday, February 15, 2003 at 22:52:59 (PST) Which reminds me,,,, I wonder how long the saying that was painted on the HP Turbine "Shine She May, Run She Must" stay there ??? Was painted on during the 77-78 West-Pac by Chuck Burrows. Plus I believe I have the priviledge of being able to say I had the Coral Sea going its fastest ever. During a full power run and the way to Gonzo Station in 79. It was my last watch as throttleman in 3 Eng. before flying off the ship to go to Diego Garcia. I don't remember the exact RPM but it was over 200 and over 36 Knots.. Just before I sucked a boiler off line and handed the headset to my relief.... Ahhhhh yes the last watch... Remember when President Ford's son or brother was to come on the ship and we spent 2 days field daying the Engine room and Alabama Davy Davis decided to wash down the Electrical panel behind the reduction gears and blew all power to the engineroom, including the vents..... Ya think the upper level of the pump room was hot before,,,, man it was as close to hell as I've been so far.... Red devil blowers was all we had at the time and we were standing 15 min watches cause the heat was around 160. Tom Davis where are you these days? Then after all that Little Ford came down to 3 Engine and looked around and went thru the little hatch to the pumproom and turned right around and was sweating so bad he walked right out after 5 mins. Sissy, definatly not "Snipe Material"... But speaking of true SNIPES how bout LUKE SAVAGE are you still around. Bet you can't drink a whole bottle of tequila now-a-days.. $20 bucks and he did it in San Diego on the beach... What A MAN !!!!! and he lived..... Remember knocking out Curtis Ford with one punch to the forehead as jumped at you from behind by the throttle board. I haven't laughed that hard in years. I never seen anyones back hit the ground so fast.. Where is George Tillman, Chuck Caswell and lets not forget Danny Arceneau,,,, suckass you still owe me a pack of cigs. Only guy I know that would buy 2 packs of cigs on payday and be bumming the next day, but it really pissed us all off when you drive up on the pier after you got out with your brand new Harley, from saving all that cig money.... My first memory was in the PNSY shipyards when Chief Lynn went off on Bosn Eli(Evil). After liquid lunch at the DRYDOCK pub. ha! I worked in repair with the "BEAST" (ABF2 DON EAST),Bill Meyher (ABE), Winnewood, Supko, Fudge and Almond. After the yards we were at sea and playing UNO in repair and locked winney in the catwalk during the PERFECT STORM. HAHAHA! Almond kept saying "im getting sick" until he finally puked. Then i was sympathetic and puked on him. was in bed for three days for sea sickness.hehehehe! good ole days! After i went mess cranking i went to below decks to work for Bill Langdon (MY MENTOR) Where are you? Taugt me the system in less than 30 days. Fast huh. Then i was left in the pumproom for days without a relief. hehehehe! Jerry Henery, Steve Lehman, Smitty, Are you still chasing cars? Remember Naples, Italy? hehehehe! Bobholtz, i cant ever forget him in Istanbul, Turkey (the compound)hehehehe! Where is the yeoman Bill Cruey? If anyone knows where he is let me know. What about Chief Sol? Heard hes a bosn. What about Tim Rose, I had Talked to his sister a few years back she said he was beat up and has permant brain damage and was in a nursing home. When I first saw her I remember thinking how old and beatup she looked. Yet there was something intimidating about her. Little did I know that I would be a small part of a great legacy. We as her crew worked very hard and played hard when we could. I have fond memories and the greatest respect for my shipmates and the leadership aboard her. It seemed as though the Coral Sea was continually being called upon for various missions and we always rose to the occasion no matter how tired we were. For awhile there I think we believed that there was nothing that we could not do if called upon. She was old, tired, beatup, and not very flashy. But she was beyond a doubt "THE AGELESS WARRIOR". May God rest her steel soul. Glen Sievert <sievertgc@webtv.net> - Sunday, January 19, 2003 at 14:52:50 (PST) Was a recruit fresh out of boot camp and A school to become an operations specialist in 1991 picking up orders to report to the USS Constellation CV-64 which was going through a SLEP period in Phili. Myself and 2 other shipmates traveled together from Va. Beach to Phili to report and had to park in a parking lot on the far end of the base. As we started walking seabag in one hand orders in the other and rain comming down like crazy, we had no idea were we were heading or where our ship even was. It was a Sunday evening not hardly a sole on the yard. I bet we walk for about 45min before we came to this hulk of a ship. We knew that the Connie was in pretty bad shape or looked in pretty bad shape from were it was being re-done, but with no on to guild us or help us and being unable to locate a hull number we walked up the ships ladder onto the quarterdeck of the you guessed it!!!! CV-43 Coral Sea. We said to each other, "you've got to be kidding" this thing is locked up tight and not a soul around. We were banging on hatch doors and yelling but as you can guess no one answered. Puzzeled soaking wet we made are way off the ship and just alittle bit further down the road and found our new home CV-64. Fresh, new, and dumb we were. Today, we three still think of the USS Coaral Sea as our first Command. S.D.Wells <swells@ezy.net> - Saturday, January 18, 2003 at 15:26:40 (PST) Just checking back in for another year. I remember bringing in the New Year w/ Duse & Bush on the forward sponson w/ a 50 cal. locked and loaded, wearing flack vests, helmets, and night vision scopes, watching the Naples skyline light up w/ fireworks. Its a moment I'll never forget. It is hard to believe that 17 years have passed since that time. God Bless all those who served on her. Especially those who served in G-3 Div. from 84-87. AO3 Mac Tim McCluskey <tmac@piggott.net> - Monday, December 30, 2002 at 20:10:54 (PST) Oops. My finger must have slipped. To finish what I started: Saddest memory of the CORAL SEA: seeing it at the Decommissioning. (The '50s she was a FORT). fONDEST: the ceremony of the Decom. Proudest: when the sailor sang "PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN" as the last crew filed off. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
