Comments: I wanted to make sure I got my last post in for 2008. Joe Land so good to see you posting here. I exchange emails with my old cook striker buddy Jesse Mamagun often. He often kids me about how he never saw a young man work so hard until I got on Mr."Ks" bad side. A few years later as a drilling reservest when I made e-5 K actually sent an attaboy letter to the command and the Co read it when he gave me my crow. |

Comments: Was sad to hear of the passing of Commanding Officer Peck,he had just become CO when I reported to the Coral Sea. I remember after we got the shaft fixed ahen we came back from Hong Kong I was up up on vultures row when we were shaking down the repair and Capt.Peck came around from the other side of vultures row and he looked at me and said, this is more like it we are starting to look like a carrier again he and I stood there and watched them launch about 20 planes and then watched them recover them, all went well, and you could tell he was very happy, between launching and recovery we talked like we had known each other all our lives,I really liked Capt Peck and he will surely be missed,God's Speed Captain Peck,I salute you. |

Comments: Sorry to have this to share, but I though my shipmates would want to know:
Rear Admiral Paul Arthur Peck October 22, 1926 - October 8, 2008 Resident of Walnut Creek Navy Rear Admiral Paul Arthur Peck passed away peacefully at age 81 surrounded by his family. He was raised in Birmingham, MI, and entered the Navy shortly after his High School graduation in June 1944. He remained on active duty for 34 years until his retirement in August of 1978. Paul was selected for flight training in 1945, received his wings in 1947, and was commissioned an Ensign in 1948. He served on several aircraft carrier squadrons and logged some 6,000 hours of flight time and 1,000 carrier landings. In his career he was awarded two Legions of Merit, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star with Combat "V", 21 Air Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal and several other decorations. He was selected for the rank of Captain in 1971 and reported as Commanding Officer of the USS Dubuque (LPD-8). He was later selected for command of an aircraft carrier and was ordered to the USS Coral Sea (CV-43) as Commanding Officer in November 1972. In 1974 he assumed the rank of Rear Admiral and was assigned to the staff of the Commander in Chief of the Atlantic. In 1976, he received orders to report as Commander Carrier Group 3, home ported in Alameda, CA. Admiral Peck's educational background consists of a bachelor of science degree, Summa Cum Laude from Northwestern University, and a juris doctorate from the University of San Diego. He attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI, the DOD Computer Institute in Washington, DC, and the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA, among other service and civilian schools. After retirement from the Navy in 1978, the Pecks resided in Oakland and Walnut Creek. Paul was a member of the California and Federal BAR and specialized in estate planning practice and business law. He also served as an Adjunct Professor for the Naval War College from 1990 to 1995. RADM Peck served on the Boards of several corporations and as National Director of the Navy League. He was also a founder of the Association of Naval Aviation and a member of the Far East Society of San Francisco. RADM Peck married the love of his life, Betty Mae Zeunert-Smith, in 1949. She supported him for 23 different moves throughout the U.S. during the course of their 30-year naval career. They were blessed with three daughters. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela and Linda; and three grandchildren: Jordan, Sophie, and Adam. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and greatly loved by his family. He touched the lives of many people. |

Comments: Ant and the Contact Lens: a true story
Brenda was almost halfway to the top of the tremendous granite cliff. She was standing on a ledge where she was taking a breather during this, her first rock climb. As she rested there, the safety rope snapped against her eye and knocked out her contact lens . 'Great', she thought. 'Here I am on a rock ledge, hundreds of feet from the bottom and hundreds of feet to the top of this cliff, and now my sight is blurry.' She looked and looked, hoping that somehow it had landed on the ledge. But it just wasn't there.
She felt the panic rising in her, so she began praying. She prayed for calm, and she prayed that she may find her contact lens.
When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the lens, but it was not to be found. Although she was calm now that she was at the top, she was saddened because she could not clearly see across the range of mountains. She thought of the bible verse 'The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth.' She thought, 'Lord, You can see all these mountains. You know every stone and leaf, and You know exactly where my contact lens is. Please help me.' Later, when they had hiked down the trail to the bottom of the cliff they met another party of climbers just starting up the face of the cliff. One of them shouted out, 'Hey, you guys! Anybody lose a contact lens?' Well, that would be startling enough, but you know why the climber saw it? An ant was moving slowly across a twig on the face of the rock, carrying it!
The story doesn't end there. Brenda's father is a cartoonist. When she told him the incredible story of the ant, the prayer, and the contact lens, he drew a cartoon of an ant lugging that contact lens with the caption, 'Lord, I don't know why You want me to carry this thing. I can't eat it, and it's awfully heavy. But if this is what You want me to do, I'll carry it for You.' I think it would do all of us some good to say, 'God, I don't know why You want me to carry this load. I can see no good in it and it's awfully heavy. But, if You want me to carry it, I will.' God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
Yes, I do love GOD. He is my source of existence and my Savior. He keeps me functioning each and every day Without Him, I am nothing, but with Him....I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13)
This is a simple test. If you love GOD and are not ashamed of all the marvelous things He has done for you, send this to ten people.. |

I just want to note here that the Coral Sea Assn is continuing a tradition like her namesake, ie; the USS Coral Sea.To wit, we have established another "first" We held our 30th annual reunion in an established dog kennel. On the more serious side, John Ranson, chairman of this year's reunion did such an outstanding job, he is to be congratulated. If it weren't for John's capability, Lord only knows how our reunion would have turned out.
With regards to our business meeting, I thought it stunk. Pres. held no control whatever and the rest is history. If we continue holding annual business meetings in this manner, it won't be long before we can kiss our association good by. |

I don't agree with President- elect Obama's stand on several issues, but the American people voted and more of them thought he was the best man for the job and that's what makes the United States of America the greatest country on Earth. I recall playing dedications for a bunch of you guys to record and send home to your sweeties. That l-o-n-g stay in Subic while they fixed our reduction gear will forever stay with me. The smell of the dock-workers cigarettes was worse than anything I remember. Lotta liberty! And Grande Island!!! I remember one division bar-b-que when a few of us swam across from the base to the island. Crazy kids! It's not very likely, but if anyone remebers me, give me a shout! Smooth sailing to you all! I was in HC-1 det 6 in 1972, and while working the night shift, I used to turn in avionics boxes to your office which was located next to the HC-1 det 6 maintenance shack.
I then worked TDY in AIMD avionics (IM-3 division) during the 1973 cruise, but used to visit my squadron mates in the HC-1 maintenance shack.
We probably never crossed paths. |

"Donald M Colwell lost his grandson Bentley Eugene Colwell on June 2nd 2008 due to an accidental drowning. Bentley was 18 months old and managed to get out a door from his house without anyone noticing. This is a huge loss to Don and his whole family. We are requesting any prayers in behalf of Bentley and his family." |

Comments: Aboard TAD in '73. A mishap occurred then and there's no account of it in these records. Nor could I find info about it elsewhere. Perhaps somebody reading this can help. I recall a fatal cold cat launch in which a navigator was declared missing after a search. As you all know, it was chilling when the C.O. announced the loss. I often wonder about the name of the aviator who perished that day, especially each Memorial Day. And I wonder about the details of the tragic event. Perhaps somebody reading this can fill in the gaps. I requested of a mine team colleague to add his memories of the incident. MN3 Bob McManus permitted me to post them here: F4 cold catshot, dips and then peals off to the starboard side, Lt in front seat hits the Martin Baker ejection seat and out he goes, chute deploys, splash, recover, pilot on board. Ltjg in rear seat, navigator, hits the button, up goes seat and co-pilot, no chute, down comes ejection seat, co- pilot still attached. We search for 8 hours until Captain "Paul" Peck calls off search and announces to ships crew that said Ltjg died doing what he loved in life. That's all I remember... To our Fallen Hero, may he rest in peace. |

Comments: Well - Well - Well. It was great getting together with all you boots in Ft. Wayne, IN this year. God willing, I'll see most of you again in Kentucky this year. AFTER I get off of my Med Cruise on Norwegian Cruise Lines' MS Jade. The only reason I signed up for that cruise is because it is similar to the Med cruise of '52 I was given courtesy of Uncle Sam. I'm really looking forward to going to Villafrance, Cannes, Naples, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome and a few other ports that we hit in those days. Patton, if you're still alive, do you ever think of me. Ha ha. I hope I give you bad dreams. And my good buddy Dick Fochler, CS1, if you're still around, thanks for what you did for me. |

Comments: I have many memories onboard "Coral Sea" but a couple of them still come to mind though. One particular when we were just above the "Line of Death" directly in the middle of Benghazi, Libya and Augusta Bay, Sicily, in mid-late 1986 when,...correct me if I'm not 90% correct.... there was an Airman(last name Moll, I believe) literally jumped off of the flight deck because he was I guess- tired of being up there, and we were recovering "18's and A-6's and visibility was about 6.5nm. I was in "combat" and just came back down being relieved as the bridge talker and my next watchstation was the DRT operator station(Dead Reckoning Tracer) and a standard prank was to say to the operator "Man Overboard"! I told Huston and Freeman if they say it again I'll really put the DRT in the mode for Man Overboard. As I finished saying that,..it was announced over the 1MC. I remember my Sr. Chief(Moore) made sure "no one" came over to my station to plot approx. where AN Moll was at. He was recovered in about 9 mins from beginning to end , but....not without incident. He didn't want the SAR swimmer to get to him - when he did get into the helo,... they radioed back to us and CATTC, and the bridge that he was trying to hit the pilot(which was the XO) of HS3, but before he could walk to the island,..he was sedated for being unruly and ,..not thinking right. I know someone can/will add to this without prejudice. Another incident occured while at Nav detail about to anchor in Palermo, Sicily about 3 weeks(approx) after the AN Moll swim. Some, or all may remember this because it had to do with 5 people - 2 Marines and 3 sailors on Sponson 8(trash station) when Marines would literally climb down a rope/line, touch the water, and climb back up to the sponson. I was taking a bag of trash back there and I did it with no prob,..went back to "combat" and about 10 mins later, Man Overboard-Man Overboard- Port Side. The last sailor when down to touch the water. But when he got to the rail to get back on the sponson,...His dumba** got tired and let go and fell in the water. "That's a Squid For You. |

I worked in the Machine Shop across from the engineering log room on the Main Deck. The Guys I worked with were a group of crazy guys who were just like me LOL. I shared a lot of great times with a lot of good friends. 1987-88 Med and Summer Med 89 were so cool, man did I enjoy those years. I miss the old bucket of bolts. I was really blessed to have had the opertune to serve onboard her. Any HT’s or MR’s out there wouild love to hear from ya. The memories I |

Remember steaming into San Francisco Bay upon return from South China Sea right after San Francisco adopted the ship as "San Francisco's Own." Comments: I'm trying to find out anything I can about my dad. I know that he was aboard the USS Coral Sea in 1963 because of his military records. I received them not to long ago and found a paper in them where the USS Coral Sea at high noon on 22 April 1963 crossed the equator at exactly the 180th meridian. Thus by virture of entering both the Domain of Neptinus Rex and the Realm of the Golden Dragon at the same time, and having been duly initiated thereto, became a GOLDEN SHELLBACK, a rare title reserved expressly for those few seafaring men courageous and skillfull enough to direct themselves to this precise location on the surface of the earth. This is really GREAT. Need more room to write. Anyway my dad was disabled and I'm not sure why. My mom left soon afterwards. If you remember him please let me know. Thanks to ALL YOU GREAT NAVY GUYS!!!!!!! |

Comments: I was just a young AZAA during the '87-'88 Med Cruise, and this was my first ship. Didn't realize how bad shape this ship was in until I made it to my next ship, but the Coral Sea will always hold a special place in my heart. I still remember the wonderful berthing (NOT!) and the mess decks (where we would be held captive with our noses buried in our food as they moved nukes around the ship) and standing flight deck watch during heavy seas as waves broke over the bow. Good times! |

Had cold turkey sandwiches at a small cafe outside Aloha stadium for my Thanksgiving dinner. Did the World Cruise '83, got my Shellback card and of course the "We did the Ditch" patch (for sailing thru the Suez Canal). Check out Wikipedia site for a brief history of our ship, including a picture of us sailing under the Golden Gate bridge. Can't see me in the photo but I was up there somewhere on the flight deck when that photo was taken. Scott Richter, Dave Crook, John Cobb or anyone else from VC-5 Cubi Pt, if you read this, e-mail me. Sad to read that they scrapped the ship. |

Comments: Just signing in to the 2008 deck log. I was wondering who has the most hours on the helm of the Coral Muru. I ended up with about 210 hours steering the old girl around the world. It was a great place to be on the the bridge of a warship like the Coral Sea. Fare winds and following sea's. D. |

Comments: I remember the first time I saw the Coral Sea. It was on approach from the window of the COD. A First Class Petty Officer was at the window and tap me on the shoulder and pointed at the window I though she was the most pretty sight I ever seen. I had the best times on board the Coral Sea we worked long hours during flight ops and if the CAT went down all night to be ready for the AM launch cycle I remember working with BUBBA. GIZMO RIGGS K12 “nicknames” and as I sit here looking at the post I remember JD “ if I am correct you used to operate the JBD’s” before your enlistment time was over. I must admit it is sad to know the old girl was scraped lots of great memories on board her from all of us who have served on her thru out her outstanding career. P.S they should have scraped the Midway |

Comments: Happy 2008 to all Coral Sea shipmates. Lou and Joe, good to hear from you both. This is getting to be serious stuff now since it's harder and harder to find anyone in the log from the straight-deck years. I have a great photo of the Coral Sea passing in front of the Statue of Liberty that I use as the "desktop" for my computer monitor. Everytime I turn it on, there she is! What a glorious site and it helps me to remember those days when we had the whole world in our hands. Good luck to all of you. Let's hope were all here to celebrate 2009. - Ray |
