Comments: Last set of colors flown on the USS CORAL SEA. On 1-28-2014 I went into a minit-mart with my son. I said I was going to see if they had any hot wings ready. He said dad its only 10.30 in the morning. I said SO. I went to the back and ask if any hot wings were ready, she said no, so I turned and walked away. This other lady came out and said SIR, were you on the CORAL SEA. I had my CORAL SEA hat on. I said yes 1967 to 1971. She said she had the last set of colors flown on the USS CORAL SEA. She was on the decommissioning crew and lowered the flag herself. I said is there anyway you would sell it to me. She came back with a big NO! My heart sank, but then she said but I will transfer the colors. I wanted to give it to someone who was actually on the CORAL SEA. I teared up. That flag is on my mantle encased in a glass case. My clothes got soaked too, I guess that was Coral Sea's way of saying Goodbye to me. I'm from WI but moved to,Louisiana 8 years ago.5th Division and our Fire Control Technician's shared the same berthing quarters. We were a great team when it came to firing the 5 inch gun's. Loved watching Victory at Sea, reminded him of his duty on the CS. Worked the deck until he saved someone from a prop. His reward was to show movies. Lost his Zippo in the Mediterranean Sea. |
