Merry Christmas from Northeast Arkansas to all who served aboard this great ship. May God bless each of you this holiday season and in the coming year. I served aboard her from 2/84 - 7/87, G-3 Division. I was known as "Mac". I still look back and know I proudly served on the greatest ship in the fleet. To all those who served during that time and to those who are serving this great nation at the present time, I salute you and Bravo Zulu to you all.

The time was just weeks before Christmas the year was 1968, I boarded the USS Coral Sea CVA-43, came aboard over the wire from a restocking ship where I slept on the deck for the weeks it took us to get to the South China Sea. Spend my 3 months doing my mess duty then went to V-3 division where I served out my four year enlistment. I have grown to love this ship and the times I served. I can't recall the ship that brought me to the South China Sea to board the Coral Sea. would welcome hearing from any one who may have a idea. A lot of us grew to manhood aboard this fine lady

I served aboard the Coral Sea with Air Wing Two on two cruises, 66-67,67-68, with VA-25, "Spads". I was so sad to hear what happened to the Coral Sea, I just could not believe the Navy was scrap the best carrier in the fleet. The pictures were really sickening. I felt like a family member had been murdered, not just died from old age. I have alot of good memories from the cruises aboard Coral Sea. I remember the screws that broke on our way to yankee station, the R&R in Hong Kong, Philppenes, Japan. Had alot of friends lost during the days on yankee station due to accidents, all the sleep lost because of accidents. Those were really the days to remember. I want to wish all of you who served aboard the Coral Sea a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.AMH3 Carrier

I'am now retired and my wife and I live in Oregon. We go to the coast alot and I sometimes see CVA-43. I can hear the crew yelling: Water hours again!!!!!!! Other ship's I served on where the USS Hornet CVS-12, 1962-64, USS Iwo Jima LPH-2, 1966-69, When I retired I was at NAS Whidbey Island.

Was in V-1 division from '78- '82, just wanted to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone who ever sailed on San Francisco's own. Lord, bless the men of the Coral Sea for they've already done their time in hell. Speaking of that last line, I remember a poem about the "men of the Coral Sea" being around when I was aboard. If anyone else remembers it and knows where I can get a copy of the poem, please leave a message in the guest book. I do not have e-mail at this time. Thanks, P.S. Bob, this is a wonderful site and you have done a fantastic job keeping the memory of the USS Coral Sea (CV-43) alive for us. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Hello everyone can not seem to let her go even though I disliked the military life. I just wanted to add to my last post. I was TAD down to Long Beach to do rehab work on the old girl before the 74 deployment. I was in charge of the electrical team trying to get her in shape. As I remember we were delayed because of all the complaints about the ship and finally left port in Alameda just before Christmas. We went on water hours after leaving San Francisco until we dry docked in the Philippines for a month. Man was that horrible duty....NOT!!!!!!!!! And how bout Australia boys what a gas that was, were you UA?????? with this half of the crew. Good thing we were not in a real war. Oh ya how about the USS Myaquese and destroying the Cambodian military in three days. Ok enough.

For an honorable ship that is now only history, we honor and thank all who served her and what she did for us. Never served on her decks but did happen to get on board the hanger deck by accident one night in Yokosuka returning from R&R. Realized the error and quickly scampered off to the Hancock where I was supposed to be in the first place! PAC AME-2 ('61-'64)

I served with pride aboard the Coral Sea in G division during Viet Nam. Captain Peck and Captain Rogers were the C.O.'s I served under. It is true, the loyalty you feel towards your ship lasts a lifetime. I only hope the sailors and marines serving aboard the "super carriers" today will experience the comraderie I did aboard CVA 43-San Francisco's Own. Anchors aweigh!

Forgot to mention, I was in 1st Div., Deck Department. Also, Glen Sabin and I were friends of LCDR. Bird, wonder where he is. Also wonder where Lt. Knight is at. He gave me my nickname, "Spash," he said that was the sound I'd make when I got thrown overboard... joking, of course!

I just found this website... it's great there's a site for San Francisco's own... the USS Coral Sea! I was aboard in the early 1980's, when homeported at NAS Alameda, during the command of Dunleavey and Johnson. I was in the Deck Department, with Lt. Knight and Chief Hernandez, and made the cruise to Hawaii; and rejoined the ship while dry docked at Portsmouth after the World Cruise. I have many fond memories aboard ship, and still am friends with Glen Sabin, who was in Photo. Does anyone remember standing on the flight deck, aft, and the shaking from the screws? I spent most of my time underway on the Coral Sea at the Helm, on the Bridge, or on Forward Lookout. That was the best vantage point for Flight Operations, especially at night, when those big Phantoms would catapoult off with the afterburners lighting up the night. I have many momentos still... even have my green jacket with all my patches sewn onto it, and "Vince" on the back in big letters. I was down in San Diego recently, and the Coral Sea's sister ship, the Midway, is there and now a musuem. It brought back alot, and I was sad to think the Coral Sea went to scrap, I really thought they would want it in San Franscisco for a musuem or something, it would be nice to visit the ship if it were. Even though she's gone, the memories are alive and like it was all just yesterday. Would enjoy hearing from other shipmates.

V-4 division 1967 under Lt. Tettenburn and "admiral" Dolinger. Hello to my good shipmates whom I departed shortly after the Bob Hope show for air traffic control school down in Georgia. Boy, was Tettenburn mad at me for leaving. It has been a great 27 years and I have only spoken to David "Sam" Huston who lives with his bride and a pack-mule in the high mountains of the Idahoes. I have invited him to visit me in the proud RED STATE of South Carolina but he remains set in his ways. God Bless and hope to see a familiar name from the past.

I had the chance to visit the Coral Sea back in 3-4th grade, when it was docked in Oakland, Ca. It was one of the defining moments in my life that interested me in the Military. I have no idea why I made the last entry stating I was in VF 213 aboard in 1969-70 I was in VF 161. My first orders were in fact to Vf 213 but they were coming home from vietnam just as my sea duty was due so my orders were changed to go to VF I61 to complete my sea duty before discharge.I was an Ams 2 in the airframe shop. I am still in close contact with my four best buddies from that cruise in fact we all just had a reunion a few years ago in Ixtapa Mexico. Myself,Bod Dudzienski,John Walch, Thom Stefanik and Rick Rausch all met there for a week of remembering and the funny thing was that even after more than 30 years the things that made us fast friends then bonded us again almost immediately!!Would love to hear from anyone in the airframe or electricians shop or Duncan Runge from the O2 shop

My Dad Spurgeon Ray Cason was on the 1956 crusie VF11 Coral Sea CV43 (they were called the RED REAPERS. I am very proud of my Dad and his 20 years he served this Great Country. I am in the process of making a scrapbook album of his military years. I am very excited about this web site I stumbled across. My Dad is a live. He lives in Clute, Texas and his email is srmj@mastnet.net It would be great to hear from anyone that was aboard at that time.

never stationed aboard her, this Jarhead had a couple of good friends in the MarDet circa 1980-81; lost track of them. One had a harley and left it with me when the ship deployed, and he and i went to a rather unsavory bar in our blues on a number of occaisions. The preceding should i.d. me to them. If either see this hope they will contact me. God bless all her served on her, squid and jarhead alike. Gunny

My father was on the Coral Sea in 1965-1966. His name is Will Jones. He was with the vf-154. I want to hear from some of the African Americans on the ship at this time. My father shared great stories. He came in as a PN3 working AO3. He has named names such as cmdr. Donnelly, Carl Stowe, Philuster Wooten, and many more. He was bunked on the second > level. If anyone is familar with Will Jones or even > have good stories, please email me at my address. > His family is planning a great birthday surprise and > this would make his day. Hello All, I was onboard 81 to 85 R-div. I am working on a screenplay about the night our ship had the collision with the Tanker Napo. If you or someone you know was onboard during that time I would love for you to email me with your story. You dont have to write a book, just the memories that stand out. Like where you were when it happened, what part of the ship were you in, what damage you witnessed etc. I am also seeking any film footage of the Coral Sea it doe's not have to be of the crash it can be footage from 1950 or footage from the day before they put her to rest. Thanks to all! Patrick Carley

It really hurt when I found out the best in the west was no more. I looked at the final photographs of the Coral Sea. I have to admit it was like seeing a good friend die. I remember anxiously counting the days until I could get off and out of the service. It might sound weird but I really miss those days. The WEST-PAC and World CRUISE was among the best days of my life. AO3 Smith, G-2 Div 1982-84

As a young man serving the Navy on his first tour aboard the Coral Sea, I never realized how hard we worked. Now with a year left to make 30, I have known to appreciate what we all did for the Navy and the good ole' U.S.A. My experience onboard forged my future years in the Navy and leaves me many days reminiscing fond memories of stewburners I worked with. To all of them, I say ALOHA! April 1976 - November 1979.

I served aboard the grand old lady between 84 & 87 v-2 division. Had alot of jobs, worked in arresting gear for a short, tool room, and lucked out in plat lens to end my time. I was talking to some of my partners about the good old days and just happened to find this site. Talk about memories of days gone by. Friends that you make and never really forget. Getting nick names that you never really know why you got them or what they mean, mine was "NORT". Remember never ending flight opps, sleeping in the net around the ship when we had time. When we had time playing Axis & Allies. Hitting the ports looking for the first place to get drunk and find a woman. well gotta go for now.

They consisted of aircraft and other related operational incidents. I was an enlisted member of Helicopter Support Squadron 1 - Detachment 3, a great unit. We had to be. I just stumbled across this site today and what a wonderful cruise down memory lane it turned out to be. It's nice to know I am not the only one with such fond memories of the old Coral Maru. She was my first ship of what turned out to be many during a 20 year career, and it's absolutely true what they say about a Sailor's first ship! I saw a couple names I recognized in the 2004 decklog, and am looking forward to going through previous years aas time permits. Are there any "Weather Guesser's" out there anywhere from any period. I was a member of OA Division 1980-1982. I'd encountered pictures of our terrific ship being scrapped somewhere a few years ago, and it's nice to know that I am not the only one who got very emotionally looking at those sad, sad pictures. diksagev@yahoo.com

Just heard on ABC News about how the U.S. Military is treating the disabled American Veterans from the Iraqi War. A soldier was promoted and recieved a bonus for re-enlisting. Shortly after that he was seriously wounded and the doctors didn't expect him to live. He recovered and was given a discharge and sent home. Later he got a letter from the Army asking him that he had to pay back his bonus in full. Since he couldn't pay the money back, the Army reported him to the Credit Bureau. I'm hoping that all of us Veterans can band together and do something about this. (Ex Coral Sea CVA-43 sailor V-4 Div 68 - 72)

She was a fine ship. I sailed aboard her in 83, with Capt. "Bear" Taylor at the healm. I was attached to HS-12, we did the World Cruise from San Fran to Norfolk. In Norfolk is where the Coral Sea went into dry dock and had some major cosemetic surgery. It was shortly after that when she was decommisioned.

My first two cruises were aboard one of the Navy's most veteran carriers, she might have been old but she still put out, one of her slogans and one we were proud of. We kept her fighting to the end shipmates. Her final deployment to the Med in the summer of 89 was more of a farewell cruise then a deployment, the crew had a good time and showed her off to the world in style. I'll never forget the Coral Maru.

I was in V-1 from 86-89 in V-1 Division. I started out chockin' and chainin' in Fly 3 under ABH3 McAfee. ABH3 Clifford was Fly 2 PO and ABH3 Bradley was Fly 1. I moved up to Crash and Salvage and had some great times there. Chief Bickers was the Crash LCPO. I made the Med Cruise onboard in 1988. I went on to many other newer, more modern ships but I still have the fondest memories from onboard Coral Sea. Drop me a line if you were there with me, or even if you were there ever.

Thanks for the great site. Will take a lot of time to browse through this but is worth the effort on my part and glad you went through the effort on your part. I was in OE Division from 10-66 to 8-69. Had a great time. But like I have read in other sites, you only seem to remember the good times. I even kept a green book of 100 reasons not to re-enlist. But you know what? Today I can't even remember what prompted the comments. Made 3 Westpacs. Had an avail in Bremerton, WA. in 69 where I met my wife. Still married to the same gal, 2 daughters, 1 grandson and 3 grand-daughters. Why can't we have grand kids first? It is so much more fun. Glad I had an opportunity to sail on the 43. Does anyone know where to get a 68-69 Westpac cruise book? I work at Puget Sound Naval shipyard and am retiring 1-3-05. Things are chenging so much I hardly recognize the joint.

I was in VA-94 on the 1971-72 Westpac cruise and worked on the Integrated Weapons Team with Don Jackson, Gary Gallion, Bill Hanes, Lowell C. Ragsdale, and Roy Griffin (he was our boss), and others. Does anyone else remember listening to the "Fantabulous Lovebone" DJ over the ship's radio station? His music sucked but his handle was catchy.

I served aboard Coral Sea as a member of the Marine Detachment from Oct. 1982 to Oct. 1984. When I joined the Marines I expected to be aboard ship some of the time but not all of the time! However, in retrospect, to have served aboard the Coral Sea, and especially to have sailed around the world with her in 1983, was a unique experience and one that I would not trade for anything. If any MarDet guys from that era should read this, do write. Semper Fi! James A. Christensen Vancouver, B. C.

I had the honor of serving aboard CVB 43 on the Med cruise with VA45 CAG4. I also have the unfortunate experience to be with the Baltimore City Police Dept and watched the slow agonnizing dismantling of our ship. I also got a chance to fly over her in the police chopper and got some fly over tapes and even landed on the flight deck to get some stills. My Med cruise was April 52 to Oct 52 with Capt. Parie as skipper. This was my only ship experience but the cruise to Gitmo and the Med was something I will never forget. It was hard work aboard and definatly not a pleasure cruise.

1973 - 1975 -- V-1 Division – Dan Murphy HERE IS A GREAT LPO STORY. During that time, there was LPO Moritz, ABH-1. Real pain in the ass to us lower rates. My friend from S-2 (in charge of 'stores working parties') Jeremiah Hickman would forewarn me about a stores working party, the following day. I'd make sure I would intentionally piss off LPO Moritz by the end of the day, so he would assign me SWP, the following day. Since I grew up in San Jose, and with the ship stationed in Alameda, (40 miles), I always tried to find ways to get home. When the "boatswain's whistle blew," and the announcement, "stores working party, muster abreast elevator number two,” I’d be sure to let LPO Moritz know that I was leaving for arduous labor, packing stores below decks. When I arrived down at “EL#2,” there would be Hickman sitting on a stack of “stores.” He’d see me and comment, “I see you’re on the stores working party list!” After that, he’d then announce, with a enlisted man to enlisted man salute, “have a nice day.” Within minutes, I was in my blue Ford Pinto heading down Highway 17 down to San Jose. Those were the days, I have to admit. ONE MORE! While directing a very large A-3 Skywarrior to the #1 catapult, (we had to stand high up on the bow) the thick bridal cable started to return back to the plane, with me right there on the catapult. The cable clipped me in the heel, threw me up into the air. I then landed prone on my back. Miraculously, I wasn’t injured. Then I heard the Air Boss’s voice over the ‘mouse,’ “corpsmen to the bow, corpsmen to the bow.” “Hummmm,” I quickly thought, “light duty for a few days.” I suddenly had a lower back strain that got me some light duty for a few days. The chief put me to work in the compartment. – Hey cut me some slack, I had just turned 20. If anyone remembers the Murf and his antics, email me. I basically got along with most everyone, as far as I can remember. I toured the Midway in San Diego recently, and that brought back fond memories, (same class A/C).

Served on the Maru for Westpacs in '66 & '67 as an AQ3 - V-6 division Avionics Shops underneath the flight deck. My job was setting up the avionics test benches for the various aircraft onboard. Plenty of Sea Stories - losing the screw blade between Yokusaka and Yankee Station. The Zuni rocket going off on the mess decks - I was standing on the hangar deck getting ready to go down to the mess area to check the pay list and got knocked down by the blast. Coming back to SF in Feb 67 and having Carol Doda standing on a small boat and lifting her top when we sailed by! I live in the SF Bay area and have been on the Hornet a number of times - sad to see Alameda NAS in decay. Had a chance to go on the Midway a couple of months back when it was in Oakland getting painted on the way to San Diego. Brought back a lot of memories. Can't believe almost 40 years have passed! If there is anyone else out there from the V-6 "IMA" of that period, say hello! A great site!!!! Bob Gordon

I just came back from a visit to NAS Alameda, where the Cora Maru was home ported for a long time (at least in the 70's). The base is run down, but "carrier pier" is still active with the USS Hornet docked there as a museum (I wish it would have been SFO's own, instead).... Not having been there in many years, it brought back many good memories. If any of you get a chance, I'd recommend the trip... It was a day well spent... LONG LIVE CVA 43 IN OUR MEMORIES AND HEARTS...

Though I never made a 'full' cruise on the Coral Sea, it was my first carrier experience. I was a lowly E-2 when I transferred to VF-111 the Sundowners, who I met up with in the Phillipines. My memories are of the Viet Nam evacs (and getting no sleep) and the rescue of the S.S. Mayaquez. I also had the privelege of having my younger brother with me on the dependents cruise from Hawaii back to Alameda. For the most part it was a good experience.

I was on the 68-69 west pac cruise as a Plane captain with VFP-63. We were working the flight quarters schedule which could last up to 20 hours. While I was a sleep ( we slept under the flight deck, that's another story)in dream land I heard ''MARINES man your machine gun stations''. I thought this is turning into a nightmare. No, it was just our boat pulling into DA NANG harbor to off-load our Angels. One went down while on station. They checked the other choppers and found cracked rotor's.When they were repaired the flew out to the boat. Stanley E. Jensen

Quite a collection of memories here! Most of the foggy parts of my 2 Westpac cruises on the Coral Sea came flooding back to me. The photos of the dismantling of CVA 43 was sad, touching, and difficult to not keep moving forward to the next photos! I had heard bits and pieces of the "end", but this filled in all the blanks. My time with VA-155 brought me to CVA-43, and in hindsight those times and those cruises were the most intensely alive days of my existance. Most of my time was on the Flight Deck as a plane captain or crew leader/troubleshooter. The less than exciting days have been forgotten. The adrenaline pumping days (and nights!!) are what remains. The Coral Sea was a fine ship with solid leadership and a great crew. I am glad to have been part of the life of that ship! John Lyons AE-3, VA-155, Westpac 60-61 / 61-62.

There was a guy named Hoss in the lightwater shop (R-Div). He gave me my first ht punch and it was a heart check with a rubber mallet. I was an Ht in DC Shop from 81-85. I'm writing on behalf of my late husband PH2 Michael A. Skeens. He was a photographer aboard the USS Coral Sea from mid '87 to late '89 and worked in (I believe) OP Division. He died in March of '99 but he had nothing but fond memories about the ship he spent nearly three years aboard. I only with I could have met the people he talked about. People like Mr. Thomas, Rick Stam, Pat Gallagher, and Jim Pickle. (I apologize if I spelled any of your names incorrectly. I don't know if any of you gentlemen visit this sight, but Mike had nothing but fond words of and for each of you. Mr. Gallagher, Mike always said you were the finest photographer he ever met and it was a pleasure to work and learn from you. Mr. Thomas, I don't know what the details are, but he always wanted to "apologize to" you and so, on his behalf, I do. Mr. Stamm, Mike always smiled when he recounted stories you were involved in. Mr. Pickle, I cannot tell you the number of times he laughed about the two frozen pigs. I must confess to cracking a smile from time to time as well. There are so many others he talked about that I can't possibly list them here. I can say with a fair degree of certainty that he enjoyed searving with each and every one of you. Mike was perfect by no measure. But I'm sure that the experiences he shared with all of you made him the wonderful husband and father he was and for that, I thank you. I'm not expecting to hear from any of you, but if you would like to, feel freed to send me an email. I have so much about him I'm sure he'd like you all to know. God bless you all. Mrs. Michael A. I stumbled across this site and have spent the better part of a night reading almost every word on it. I was in E Division on the Coral Sea 87-89 Foward IC. I am looking for MM3 Mike Mannon, he was on the MAA until his discharge. I cant count the number of night I sat on the 02 level above the fantail and looked at the wake of the ship, amazed at the glowing trail it left. I was 19 years old and had no certainty about my future, in some way seeing the path that the ship had been on gave me a level of comfort, Then I had only a vauge notion of where were going but I knew that we would get there no matter what and that we would get home again. Today I think about the Job we did and am astounded by the fact that a group of young men whos average age was about 19 could take something that large and make it do the things that it did and get it back home again. AS with many of you the boy that I was when I got to the Coral Sea Quikley Became lost as I turned into the man I am today. I have 3 sons now, My Youngest who is 7 asked me about being in the navy and I said that yes I had in fact been in the Navy, For the first time in many years I looked at a cruise book. It was a very odd moment, as a watched him flip the pages he was looking at what he wanted to become, I however was looking at what i had been. Well Enuf of that, Does anyone remember Halifax in July of 88? The dance that was held after we gave ships tours all that day? well I got laid in one of the Conflag stations while the dance was going on.

Its good to hear Bob's comments. I can personally testify about the character and integrity of Kerry Ellis. He was a fine man. I worked close by and visited him one day at the site, told him I was a former crew member and he gave me a piece of metal from her. He even showed me on those blueprints where it was taken from (under one of the catapults). Although he was busy, he took time out to talk to me and asked me a lot of questions about my time on board. I still have the business card he gave me. I've always fancied myself as a pretty good judge of character, and this man was a first-class act if I've ever seen one. Like Bob, its good to see Coral Sea's name in print again and I hope she is exonerated of all accusations.

Update on News Flash: Having been to the scrapping yard many times as a guest of the Ellis family (operators that scrapped the Coral Sea), I can offer my opinion that there is no way those bombs came off the Coral Sea.

Kerry Ellis, Sr. was a proud man and had great respect for the ship, the environment and for anyone who ever came to visit. He was made a fall guy by the Navy for political and financial reasons. It cost him his life. His case stopped the US from sending our Navy ships to foreign lands to be ripped apart on open waters by people with no regard for safety, the environment or respect for the ships. The Navy is guilty of reckless disregard of the environment by passing these ships off, ill-prepared, to contractors with no aid or direction as to how to identify and handle hazardous materials.

Kerry Ellis, Sr. scrapped the Coral Sea without any help from the government. They didn't even give him blue prints of the ship. He had to buy a set of out-dated prints from a retired admiral to be able to scrap the ship safely. But they sure as heck were on his back constantly about safety. They had weekly inspections and fly-overs to record the progress of the scrapping. Yes, he had some accidents during the scrapping. Most were due to "surprises" left behind and not identified by the Navy. And it is very debatable as to whether he knowingly discharged hazardous material in to the harbor. I seriously doubt it based on the evidence I reviewed. (Much longer story)

That little section of harbor had been used for decades as a staging area for loading ordinance, ship repairs, and by the way, it has a huge discharge for the Baltimore storm sewer system right on site. You can imagine that when a heavy storm hits, its open season for all sorts of businesses to dump hazardous materials into the storm drains. And a lot of that ended up lapping up against the hull of the Coral Sea and settling right under her. That area was heavily polluted long before the Ellis Family or Coral Sea arrived there.

As for the bombs, there is no way that ordinance like that was on the Coral Sea. She de-commed in Norfolk. The Navy had already stripped her of many parts by 1990. She went up to Philadelphia and sat there until 1993. Again, more parts were removed and she supposedly was prepared for scrapping when she was stricken from the Navy inventory. I think someone would have discovered large bombs lying about as they crawled around the ship those three years. Of the 11 bombs unearthed, one was a 4,000-pound M65 bomb used during WW II. Coral Sea wasn't even in commission during WW II.

It is good to see her name in print again. But this one is a bum rap.

News Flash: The Coral Sea is being blamed for causing I-495 and Baltimore's Harbor Tunnel to be shut down last night and early this morning. Seems a contractor using a piece of heavy equipment to clear acreage adjacent to where she was chopped up unearthed a number of bombs yesterday. Army munition experts from the Aberdeen Proving Ground and others from the Washington, D.C. area were called in to dispose of the bombs. As of today (5/6/04) they have found a total of 11 bombs, 10 of which were deemed "safe" because they had no fuses, and one that is considered "live" as of this writing. After all the ordnance is disposed of, they are going to start a criminal investigation to try to find out why the ordnance was not properly disposed of in the first place. Pictures of the Coral Sea in various stages of dismantlement were shown on the local news stations this morning. Right now there is no way to tell if the ordnance came from the Coral Sea or not, but she's being blamed for it. The contractor in charge of her dismantlement was prosecuted for improperly disposing of hazardous materials, and died in jail according to news reports, so it makes sense that the Coral Sea is a prime suspect in this case. She may be gone, but certainly not forgotten, especially around these parts.

Found your web site while surfing. I have a Coral Sea story. I checked aboard in Oct 86 as an ADCS, assigned to AIMD as leading Chief. I soon made AFCM. Shortly after making Master Chief I complained to the XO Capt Denny McGinn that I couldn't get the Hull techs to fix a leaking urinal line. He said to me"Master Chief, do you know how to solve the problem?" To which I said, "XO, You only gotta know two things. Whats wrong and how to make sailors go fix it." To which he replied, "Master Chief, You got the job!" He asked me to take over the ships seweage system, referred to as CHT and form a trouble response team to fix head problems. He gave me an MMC named Bob Aldridge and 25 sailors that no one else wanted. In ten months we worked our selves into a very respectable crew. able to care for the CHT system, fix broken and clogged drains and a number of other problems that no one else wanted to bother with or didn't have time for. My department head was a great man and friend named Joe Dattoli. He was Machinist Mate Master Chief who got his commission and retired as a Lcdr. I am 6 days older than he is. My fellow chiefs called me "ED Norton of Jackie Gleason fame" and I loved it. No one, at least in my opinion had as much power. You see,I had control of all the sewer drains and could mess up a space in a matter of minutes, if you catch my drift. Any how, I enjoyed my time on Coral Sea,but I wanted to be a CMC so I big dealed an early transfer much to Capt OHearns dismat. He was the XO after McGinn. We didn't see eye to eye, mainly because I was taller than him. Nuff said and end of story. Would like to hear fom shipmates I served with especially ABCS John Dills. Any one know where he is? Am retired now to my farm in Kentuky. Never a dull moment in my life. I preach on sundy and work at the local school district all week as a bus driver and mechanic. God Bless all.

I have been reviewing this great site for some time but this is first time to sign in. Havn't seen many "old timers" from the 56-57 cruise. In 1981 I went with my older son to sign up in the National Guard, well they got me too because of my service record. Made Three 3-week trips to South Korea with them and a lot of other places. I was in the IC gang and I guess John Kunkel from Texas is the only one of the old ICers I've seen. I also called him when I read in the Readers Digest that he was the mayor of Throckmorton, Texas and he and the townspeople were laying a pipe line themselves to get water. Oh I stayed in the Alabama National Guard until age 61 and retired as a SFC and drawing benefits. I know many of the old gang have "passed on" and perhaps some are not computer literate. Would like to hear from some of the guys. I read of the AJ crashes posted on this site and remember the 1956 one well.

She was my ship from 30 Nov 84 until 23 Feb 88. Just wanted to say that this site brought back alot of things I had forgotten. Good and Bad. From the friends I made, and still have, and the ones that have gone. You all will not be forgotten. I live in Maryland and got to see some of the scrap work being done, very sad day for me. Worked in W-Div. Best damn Div. on her. Best damn WT's (GMT) in the fleet. Thanks to those who have worked on this site. I am proud to have been and the Navy, but most of all I am proud to say is "I was a Coral Sea Sailor."
