1977 - USS Coral Sea CV-43 - A shot of the island blowing out the boilers.

From Sid Dockery: "Smokin' Black, that ain't good..." I worked in 4 Baker fireroom and would like to help make a correction to the photo showing heavy black smoke coming from the stacks and the heading that the boilers were being blown. Yes, we did blow the boilers using valves located on the upper level of the boiler called "Soot Blowers" to help eliminate build up on the boiler tubes. It was always on the 0000 - 0400 watch and on open seas. The black smoke in the picture is the result of a speed change leaving port and 1 or more of the boilers not reacting to the added burners being kicked in to build more steam for the engineroom. When the boilers do not have enough air to the firebox you smoke black, too much air you smoke white. This air comes from two steam operated Forced Draft Blowers behind the boiler and were manually controlled with a valve from in front of the boiler. You actually had to look into a periscope which went into the individual stack to see what condition your stack was. Black, white or clear was the response back to main control when there was a report of abnormal conditions from the stacks. If I'm not mistaken we could be fined by the Cities on the bay for excessive black smoke while in port dockside, leaving or entering the bay.
